As students spend more of their free time playing video games and surfing the Internet, physical education classes in schools have become increasingly important for the health and well-being of children. Many organizations have recognized the importance of physical education and offer grants to help schools purchase equipment for their phys ed programs.

Carol M. White Physical Education Program

This federal grant offers money to schools and community organizations for the purchase of physical education equipment and the training of teachers and other staff. Grants awarded so far have ranged in amount from $90,000 to $500,000 depending on the scope of the proposal.

Keep Gym in School

This program is sponsored by the NFL and provides grants that can be used to purchase physical education equipment. Grants are given to middle schools in $1,000 increments.

The Future Fisherman Foundation offers grants to school who wish to develop fishing programs as part of their phys. ed curriculum. These grants provide money for equipment and field trips to help students experience a sport they might not otherwise experience.

Mighty Milers Live, Learn and Play Grant Program

Only available to schools that already use or have applied for the Mighty Milers fitness program, this grant provides $1,000 to a school in each of the 50 states to help schools expand their Mighty Milers running program or to reimburse expenses incurred with purchasing equipment for the program and the running of the program.

Head Start Body Start

Sponsored by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, this program offers money and aid to Head Start programs within schools to develop and purchase equipment for a physical education program that encourages physical activity, outdoor play and healthy eating. Money can also be used to fund outdoor playgrounds and other recreation facilities.
