Several organizations offer scholarship assistance to the dependents of former military personnel who have been wounded and are disabled because of wartime service. Organization sometimes limit eligibility to biological children, and sometimes offer scholarships to grandchildren or stepchildren. Some scholarships for dependents of disabled veterans have certain age requirements an applicant must meet.
Folds of Honor Foundation
The Folds of Honor Foundation offers scholarships of up to $5,000 to the dependents of deceased and disabled veterans. To be eligible, applicants must have a grade-point average of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0. The Folds of Honor Foundation offers two types of scholarships: Immediate-Use Scholarships and Future-Use Scholarships. The organization awards Immediate-Use Scholarships to dependents who are currently attending college and awards Future-Use Scholarships to dependents who are currently too young to attend college.
Military Order of the Purple Heart
The Military Order of the Purple Heart offers scholarships of up to $3,000 to dependents of disabled veterans awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in action and are members of the MOPH. To be eligible, an applicant must have a GPA of at least 2.75 on a scale of 4.0, and must be the biological child, stepchild, adopted child, or grandchild of the disabled veteran. For 2011, the deadline for application falls on February 15.
Freedom Alliance
The Freedom Alliance makes scholarships of varying amounts available to the dependents of disabled veterans. To be eligible, an applicant must be the dependent child of a veteran who is classified as 100 percent disabled. An applicant must also be a senior in high school or currently attending college to qualify for Freedom Alliance scholarships. Applicants must be under the age of 26 in order to be eligible.
Marine Corps Scholarships Foundation
The Marine Corps Scholarships Foundation makes scholarships of up to $30,000 available to the dependents of veterans of the U.S. Marine Corps, including disabled veterans. To be eligible, an applicant must have a family income of $86,000, or less, and must have a grade point average of at least 2.0. The Marine Corps Scholarships Foundation also offers a limited number of scholarships to the dependent grandchildren of disabled veterans. For 2011, the deadline for application is March 1.
Government-Sponsored Scholarships
Many state governments offer scholarships to dependents of disabled veterans. For example, the Florida state government offers full-tuition scholarships to students under the age of 23 who are dependents of disabled veterans who have been residents of Florida for at least one year.
The North Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs makes full-tuition scholarships available to the dependents of disabled veterans attending state schools, or up to $4,500 to dependents attending private colleges or universities. Check for government-sponsored scholarship programs in your state.
