Miles Law School in Alabama is among the minority of law schools that offers a part-time program. In fact, it does not have a full-time program, and all students meet for courses in the evenings. The school prides itself on catering to "non-traditional and socially conscious" students. The law school is not approved by the American Bar Association, but it is accredited by the state of Alabama, and graduates are eligible to take the Alabama Bar examination.
Official Transcripts
Prospective students are required to have a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year university to apply to Miles Law School. Students must send official transcripts directly from any undergraduate or graduate programs that they attended. The school says that students must have a "competitive grade-point average," but it does not publish a minimum GPA or provide information on the average GPA of its incoming class. Since the school does not accept scores on the Law School Admissions Test, which is required by most other law schools, students are judged only on their grades as a measure of their expected academic performance. The better a student's grades, the better the chances of admission.
Letters of Recommendation
Students applying to Miles Law School are required to submit at least one letter of recommendation, but they can submit up to two. Letters of recommendation should be provided by professors or work supervisors who can attest to a student's academic ability or work ethic. Though a letter from a judge or attorney might seem impressive, it won't be helpful unless they know the student's work firsthand.
Signed Personal Statement
A personal statement is a chance for students to help the admissions committee get to know them better. Miles Law School asks students to write a personal statement that describes any personal matters relevant to their ability to succeed in law school or the practice of law, as well as any attributes, experiences or interests that would allow students to make a distinct contribution to the law school or the legal profession. The statement should not be longer than three typed, double-spaced pages, and it should be signed.
Comprehensive Resume
Work and volunteer experience can showcase a student's leadership ability and dedication to social justice. Students applying to Miles Law School must submit a resume, and they should make sure that it is comprehensive and highlights all of their work and personal achievements. It is one of only a few pieces of information that will be used to determine eligibility for enrollment, so it should be created with the same care as for any job opening.
