Military school is an option for both high school and college students. There are different types of military schools available. There are military schools for troubled teens and ROTC programs for college students looking to enhance their college education. Prior to enrolling in military school, it is important to understand what's expected of you. Some schools require you to join the military, while others do not have this requirement.
Oregon Youth Challenge Program
The Oregon Youth Challenge Program (OYCP) is an alternative public high school. Students live on campus for 5 1/2 months out of the year and follow a strict military model. Most of the students attending OYCP are at-risk adolescents who have dropped out of high school or are failing in the traditional public school setting. Students with felony convictions are not eligible to attend OYCP.
All students attending the Oregon Youth Challenge Program must complete all three phases of the program. The first phase lasts two weeks and consists of physical development, learning the structure of the program, discipline and military indoctrination. The second phases is twenty weeks of classroom instruction.
The third and final phase is twelve months long, and it's a mentor program. During the mentor program, students are required to work within their community implementing goals and objectives. The Oregon Youth Challenge Program is open to all 36 counties in Oregon. All applicants must be at least sixteen years of age when entering the program.
