According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, personal trainers are in high-demand across the country, and the state of Florida is no exception to the trend. If you're a Floridian with a passion for fitness, consider a career in this fast-growing field. Personal trainers in Florida are not required to be licensed, but certification from an accredited organization will be necessary for employment in most gyms or health clubs.
Step 1
Check with your local Red Cross chapter to find out when you can sign up for CPR and first aid classes. Virtually all credible employers will require job candidates to show proof of training and certification in CPR and first aid.
Step 2
Enroll in a personal training school or certification program. There are several vocational schools in the state of Florida that offer curricula and diplomas for personal training, including the ATI Career Training Center, with locations in Miami and Fort Lauderdale; the National Personal Training Institute in Orlando; and Heritage Institute in Ft. Myers (see Resources).
Another option is to register with an accredited certifying organization and complete that organization's curriculum via self-study or distance learning. Requirements vary from one organization to the next, but typically you will use online study materials, textbooks and/or DVDs to prepare for a cumulative certification exam. You may also attend a training workshop. Ask the Trainer lists the top personal trainer certification organizations: The American Council on Exercise, The International Sports Sciences Association, The National Academy of Sports Medicine, The American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Step 3
Apply for jobs at gyms, wellness centers and health clubs in Florida. Popular fitness franchises in Florida include Bally Total Fitness, Gold's Gym, Choice Fitness Clubs, 24 Hour Fitness and Planet Fitness. According to City Town Info, personal trainers working in Miami, Cape Coral, Naples and West Palm Beach are generally the highest paid in the state.
Step 4
Study for and pass the certification exam administered by your school or program.
Step 5
Enroll in continuing education workshops and classes offered by your certifying organization or agency. The fitness industry is a dynamic and fluid field, so trends and methods are constantly evolving. To stay competitive, you'll need to be able to share the latest innovations with your clients.
